Cabo Verde Pushes Argentina, Messi to the Limit

Defending world champions Argentina and Cabo Verde, the second-smallest nation to ever qualify for a World Cup, played one of the most exciting matches in this year’s tournament on Friday.

On the day before July 4th, a celebration of America’s own historical underdog story, the 2026 World Cup saw its own version of a David and Goliath drama play out in South Florida.

It took almost all of extra time to decide it, as Lionel Messi and La Albiceleste survived to move on to the Round of 16 in the 3-2 victory, but the story of the match was one that fans of both sides will likely relive again and again for years to come.

For a few hours, the atmosphere at the Miami FIFA fan fest on Friday provided the kind of wild ride that a football nut can only dream of. It was exactly the kind of emotional back-and-forth that even a neutral observer, as I was, would soak up every moment of.

The vast majority of the fans on hand were the thousands of sky-blue-and-white-clad Argentinians who packed in around the festival’s four large viewing screens. However, it was the small handful of Blue Sharks supporters who made themselves loudly known throughout the match that provided the perfect contrast and reflection of the monumental nature of the task set before their national team as the evening progressed.

The match started predictably enough as Lisandro Martinez sent a towering long ball into the box that Messi was able to corral behind the Cape Verde backline and fire into the net for his seventh goal of the tournament.

The 1-0 Argentina advantage held through halftime, but in the 59th minute Ryan Mendes was able to create just enough space to feed Deroy Duarte for a shot from a tight angle that found its way past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

It was an absolutely stunning equalizer for Cape Verde that shocked every Argentina fan both at Hard Rock Stadium and at the fan festival, but sent Blue Sharks fans into delirious rounds of cheers.

It was something like the warning shot across the bow that this match would not be the cake walk that Argentina had grown so accustomed to in this World Cup, and the theatrics were only getting started.

Through pure defensive grit and determination, along with some more amazing saves by 2026 World Cup cult hero Vozinha, Cabo Verde was able to hold on defensively to push the match to extra time.

Messi, usually so prolific at scoring free kick goals from just outside the box, was stopped on three separate occasions by Vozinha, adding to the Cape Verde keeper’s legend that he has so stunningly cultivated throughout this tournament.

Just three minutes into stoppage time, however, Lisandro Martinez found the back of the net to finish off a pretty impeccable performance for La Albiceleste and give his team the 2-1 advantage and put the underdogs back on the ropes again.

Many would have figured that this was finally the moment that Argentina would take over and hold on to finish off the result, but then came one of the best goals, if not the best goal, that will likely be scored in this entire World Cup.

Sidny Lopes Cabral was almost able to disguise his looping attempt on goal as a cross into the box, confusing Martinez for just long enough for the Argentina keeper to watch the ball sail into the top far corner of the net.

If the first Cape Verde goal was merely stunning, this one simply took the breath away from everyone watching in person and around the world, and the looks of sheer disbelief on both sets of fans at the festival created a lasting image that will likely stay with me for a long time.

But unfortunately, as all good things do, this match had to eventually come to an end, and in the second period of extra time in the 110th minute Argentina was able to get the eventual winner off a corner. Cristian Romero’s header deflected in off of Cabo Verde defender Diney’s hand for an own goal.

From there, La Albiceleste finally was able to hold on much to the relief of their fans. It was a true moment of champions knowing how to hold on even when they don’t have their best night on the pitch.

But chalking up the result to Argentina simply not having a good night severely undersells just how tremendous Cabo Verde was both in this match and throughout the World Cup. They captivated fans of all stripes in a way that a Cinderella team has not been able to in quite some time.

Everything from the island nation’s diminutive size to its world class defensive rigor and efforts in net from Vozinha took the tournament by storm. They were simply a well-disciplined team capable of flashes of brilliance that put some of world football’s giants on alert, hanging with true global superstars.

And despite the loss, Friday was the ultimate testament to this run for them, and it gave their fans an unforgettable memory that they and the world will hold onto for quite some time.
